Who we work with
Compass works with leaders, owners, and Boards of medium-sized organizations, typically 20 to 500 employees.
Our work spans the not-for-profit, public, and private sectors
Most of it is in Ontario, from Thunder Bay to Kenora, and North Bay to Chatham-Kent. Some of it, and much of the experience behind it, has reached a good deal further.
We don’t publish a client list. What we can tell you is where we work, what we do there, and how long we’ve been doing it.
We earn work on reputation and experience rather than designations. Most of it arrives through someone who was in the room with us during our last job.
Health and social services
This is the largest part of the practice and the oldest. We’ve worked in the sector continuously since 2013.
Mental health and addiction agencies. Hospice and palliative care. Ontario Health Teams. Regional hospitals. Community health centres. Children’s treatment centres. Counselling agencies. Developmental services. Emergency medical services. And the regional networks, associations, and planning tables that sit across them.

Forestry, the bio-economy, construction, mining, energy, and the engineering and environmental firms that serve them.
Ian and Marla both ran things before they advised on them. Ian ran logging and woodlands divisions of 1,500 people and co-owned an engineering firm of 1,100 across 21 offices. Marla led the change management plan and implementation of a new software system for a provincial government, affecting more than 3,000 employees.
The work here includes strategy and implementation, senior advisement, agreement development and negotiation, government relations, business development, research and due diligence, and ownership transition for owners thinking about what happens to the business next.

Municipalities, post-secondary institutions, libraries, galleries, museums, and tourism organizations.
Strategy, governance, facilitation, and community engagement, usually in situations where several organizations have to agree on something and none of them is in charge.
First Nations communities and organizations
We’ve worked with First Nations communities and Indigenous-owned corporations, most often as part of engagement, planning, assessment and decision support, or agreement work inside a larger project.
